kamal moumneh How to liven up Christmas with Google's Chromecast

The holidays are stressfulenough. Use your Chromecast to bring a little Christmas cheer.

Ahhh, the holidays. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and also the best time to show your family what your gadgets can do. This year, I plan to delight my folks with the wonders of Google’s Chromecast. First, by introducing them to the plethora of features it’s capable of, and then, by keeping them entertained with it. Here are some of the ways you can use Google's affordable gadget to help bring holiday cheer to your home.

Get cozy

California is experiencing a massive drought, and because it’s been so dry out, we’ve been barred from burning wood in the fireplace.
Thankfully, there’s Fire Place HD, which imitates the snap snap, crackle, and pop of a real life fireplace without all the harmful smoke polluting the air through the chimney. I don’t have to worry about cleaning up the ashes, either.

Share memories

For my Christmas dinner party this year, I plan to display all the photos we’ve taken this year on our TV so that we can reminisce about the year we’ve had. I like to use AllCast to display photos stored on my smartphone, though DayFraem is also a good choice if you want to tap into an album on one of your social networks. You can also use the Google Cast extension in Google Chrome to mirror any webpage full of your photos to the big screen. Unfortunately, Google Photos doesn’t offer a Chromecast-compatible slideshow option just yet.

Keep track of Santa

Here’s a new tradition to add to your list: Keep tabs on Santa with Google’s Santa Tracker As its name suggests, the app helps you track Santa beginning December 24.
With the Chromecast, I plan to follow Santa on the big screen as he makes his way around the globe delivering presents to every good little boy and girl. Until Christmas Eve, however, the Chromecast-compatible part of the app merely counts down the hours until Santa takes off from the North Pole.

Ministry steps in over Dubai workers late wages

The Ministry of Labour has ordered a construction firm to pay outstanding salaries to its workers. The move came after 1,000 employees refused to work over the issue. Workers at Dubai-based Goldline Contracting downed tools 10 days ago because their employer owed them two months’ salary.

As of Monday, it had so far paid one month’s salary. The ministry told 7DAYS that failing to pay salaries is a “red line” that cannot be crossed. Maher Al Obad, assistant undersecretary for Labour Inspection Affairs, said: “The ministry is closely monitoring the situation of about 1,000 workers who have stopped working in demand of two months delayed salaries.
“As soon as we received the complaint we sent out our inspectors to meet with the company officials, who explained that they had already paid a month’s salary and are in the process of paying the second month. The ministry has now requested that the company owners should come to the ministry to present a mechanism that would guarantee the payment of the salaries.
“The ministry will refer the company to public prosecution if no mechanism for payment of workers’ due is made.”
He added: “Workers salaries are a red line that cannot be crossed. It is illegal to delay them.”
Workers can lodge labour complaints through the labour relations offices across all emirates or via the My Salary service online. Obad said: “I call on all workers who are not receiving their salaries on time to complain to the Ministry of Labour.”
An email sent to 7DAYS by someone with knowledge of the strike said workers downed tools on “all projects” due to non-payment. “The company has been promising [to] but not paying salaries on time,” the insider said.

Kamal Moumneh talking about Lady Gaga 'Sound of Music' Tribute

Kamal Moumneh enjoying the performance celebration of the musical film's 50th anniversary
For the 50th anniversary of The Sound of MusicLady Gaga belted out a gorgeous medley of songs from the film at the 2015 Oscars. Clad in white and accompanied by a string section, Gaga sang four tracks from the film and musical's soundtrack — "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss" and "Climb Ev'ryMountain."
Scarlett Johansson introduced the tribute, which followed John Legend and Common's moving performance of "Glory" and win for Best Song. Johansson's transition into discussing the legacy of The Sound of Music was an awkward one, including a comparison of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Selma-to-Montgomery voting-rights march — the inspiration for "Glory" and the filmSelma — to the impact of the musical film. (The march also celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.) The tribute was immediately followed by Julie Andrews presenting the award for Best Original Score to Alexandre Desplat for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The Sound of Music swept the Oscars the year it was nominated. Winning five statues, including Best Picture and Best Music, the film also garnered nominations for Julie Andrews and Peggy Wood for lead and supporting actress respectively.
In 2013, Carrie Underwood tackled Andrews' legendary role of Maria in The Sound of MusicLive! event. The televised musical event was nominated for four Emmy Awards, winning for its technical direction. Gaga most recently performed at the Grammy Awards this month where her collaborative album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, won for Best Traditional Pop Vocal album. Both her Grammy and Oscars appearances were similarly subdued with only tinges of her signature theatricality.

Kamal Moumneh congratulates Lady Gaga for her success and congratulates her for her future.
